Since the teaser trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens debuted in April, fan theories about the film have been circulating around the Internet. Some theories have a basis of truth, while others are merely speculation. Other than what we saw in the trailer, little is known about the newest Star Wars installment, as Disney had put forth an anti-spoiler strategy to prevent spoilers from getting out. The scripts were printed on dark-red paper, the sound track is being released the same day as the movie, stars aren’t giving away anything, and some Star Wars toys and geek gifts haven’t been released yet. Yet, the lack of spoilers has not stopped fans from formulating theories about the film.
While many fan theories have been spreading about the film, which opens in theaters on Dec. 18, we’ve highlighted some of the major ones that could possibly be true. Keep in mind that these are only theories, but they could be spoilers should they turn out to be true.
Jar Jar Binks is a Secret Sith Lord
Rumors about Jar Jar Binks have been circulating after Reddit user Lumpawarroo explained his theory that Jar Jar Binks has really been a Sith Lord this whole time. While this theory has sparked some debate among fans, there are several signs pointing to its possibility. Though his character has been seemingly useless thus far, Jar Jar has been present in every key moment of the prequels. Despite his clumsiness, he’s been able to survive various battles, which could mean he has a Jedi-level connection with the force. When he speaks, his gestures are similar to those of the Jedi when they perform mind control, insinuating that he is manipulating characters throughout the films. Another sign supporting this theory is that the emperor keeps him on hand when he’s no longer of political use, which could mean Jar Jar is more important to the Sith than it seems.
Rey is Related to Luke Skywalker
If you can think back to the trailer teaser released in April, it opened with a voice-over from Luke, “The force is strong in my family. My father has it. I have it. My sister has it. You have that power too.” While we can’t be sure who exactly he is referring to, his words are similar to those he spoke to his sister Leia in The Return of the Jedi: “The force runs strong in my family. My father has it. I have it. And my sister has it. Yes, it’s you, Leia.” Considering the parallel, it’s not ludicrous to believe that Rey is related to Luke. She’s possibly his daughter or niece.
Darth Vader will Return
Theories suggest that Darth Vader will return in The Force Awakens, but that doesn’t necessarily mean in the flesh. In the original trilogy, Obi-Wan, Yoda, and Anakin Skywalker all returned for a visit once they were dead. Though it’s possible that he’s merely a form of worship, Kylo Ren addresses Darth Vader directly at 0:05 in the trailer. Some fans suggest that Ren will try to resurrect or clone Luke’s late father.
Kylo Ren is Related to Darth Vader
The idea that Kylo Ren addresses Darth Vader in the trailer may also suggest that the two characters are related. At 0:57 in the trailer, we see Vader’s damaged helmet sitting on something that looks like an altar. As we see this image, Kylo says, “Nothing will stand in our way. I will finish what you started.” As he says this, Kylo is dressed and sounds similar to Darth Vader, further suggesting the familial plot twist.
These are some of the major fan theories that have been spreading as we await the film’s release next month. Many other theories will likely rise until then, but we can only wait to find out which prove to be true.
