Videos of little squadrons of quadcoptor drones performing visually delightful areal acrobatics have been increasing in number in recent years, and for the most part it has been little more than entertainment.  But small autonomous drones of all types have serious potential to transform science and human understanding of the world.

Now a group has come up with a way to use drones to 3D map terrain, such as the Matterhorn! Finding novel ways to use drones for the sake of good will really be the long-lasting impact of this technology.  It isn’t out of the question that the exploration of our solar system could increase drastically with the help of little robots like this.  Sending squadrons of exploration drones on small spacecraft to scout out landing zones and habitable zones on all the planets and moons could accelerate humans visiting these places!
